:-( Sob!

I have always been intrigued by the entire concept of shedding tears [Crying!! In general lingo]. What triggers those glands which are hidden somewhere behind our vision. [I donno where the tear glands are located exactly I am assuming it’s behind]. There is this particular Malayalam movie; I burst out crying every time I watch [Ente Veedu Apponteyum for my mallu readers information]. I am not among those people who carry a hankie for every other tear jerker movie. But some particular feeling in the movie breaks me down. The interesting part being that in spite of having the fear of the mascara* getting smeared over and me looking ugly, I never miss a chance to watch it. And the movie remains one of my all time favorites. So I figured out maybe I enjoy crying. Things were pretty different when I was younger. As a kid I made sure I never shed a tear in public [ By kid I mean when I was in school, I would/should have cried when I was a new born]. I remember once my headmistress asked me to meet her in her office [SCARY!!] for not wishing her in the hallway of the school. With my superb academic performance and the lineage the Ullas family had created [Thanks to my brother and his consistent top scores] there wasn’t much she could do, other than say some indirect statements to hurt me. Most of them were hinted at my supposed arrogance. [ I was just a ten year old kid shy to say Good Morning]. I don’t remember how I felt when she scolded me. But before she let me go she said “Not a single tear in your eye. Shows how you don’t repent what you did and shows your arrogance.” Maybe it is this particular incident that triggered the concept in me that crying is a good thing. Or it might as well be the plain old reason, MEN!! Whatever it be, my eyes started welling up pretty fast from the time I turned thirteen. In my present life scenario I have categorized crying to be of three degrees 1) Bursting out crying. Wailing. You have no control over it. It just explodes. Pretty ugly sight. Either make sure you are inside the rest room or just lock the door of which ever room you happen to get yourself into. 2) Tears flowing down your cheek. I personally feel I look pretty when this happens. My eyes are glazed and I even managed to look into the mirror once . Couldn’t take a picture as my camera was being used as a tear jerker mobile at that point in time 3) The times where you would have managed without wasting the water resource, until a well wisher pats your shoulder and asks if you are alright. And the water works begin. This usually will happen in a public arena. So just bend down and cover your face. You should be fine within five minutes, but you would have made a total ass of yourself by then. Now into the second level of analysis what makes us cry? I dono about the entire world, I will talk about what makes the most familiar person to me cry. And that would be me. [I feel like I am writing down the advantages of RAID 0/1 over RAID 1/0. Studying does affect the human psyche, especially when done once in two years] Burst out crying with examples: 1) When the parent of a hospitalised friend of mine, indirectly expressed his dislike in me frequently visiting. I walked out of the room ,ran downstairs, rang up my roomie and cried all the way back home. People on the hospital premises were definite, my other half has been diagnosed with AIDS a few minutes back. Underlying emotion- INSULT. 2) When after a sparkling performance in the GD (Group discussion) and Tech round. Being rejected in the Polaris HR round for having said the word gullible (that’s the reason my classmates figured out). Cried out loud to my brother in Chennai who realized at that moment that he has a career crazy sister. Underlying emotion: INSULT again. Also the feeling that I may never get a job in my life. [I got through to my present company the very next day with God’s Grace] Tears flowing down with examples 1) Every time anyone who has hurt me apologizes. Especially when they are late apologies [way after I am over the pain]. The effect is quadrupled if the person apologizing happens to be in a drunken stupor. Underlying emotion: SELF-PITY 2) When my best friend got transferred to Bangalore while I was still in Chennai. The thought that I won’t be able to steal his orange juice in the morning filled my eyes continuously for four days. I was relocated to the same project and place after four days. Underlying emotion:DONNO. Cry following the pat on the shoulder with examples 1) Total mushy stuff. I dare not include. After all this research there is something that i havent been able to analyze yet. The big macho men shedding tears. I have seen only two men cry in the long twenty four years of my life[Yes, I am 24]. I particularly remember not enjoying the sight . Thankfully both were close family members that their apparent ugliness didn’t offend me much. In spite of totally believing in the equality of sexes, I still can’t accept a man crying. Why is it so? When is the last time you cried? *mascara- I dont wear make-up. Couldnt find anything else to create the effect.

Yea. I kinda like my glazy eyes when 2 or 3 tears are coming down. It's almost hollywood like. That's an interesting thought isn't it. I should watch teary movies way more often.

Last time I cried was when I had to slice 6 onions for my mother. I don't want to remember the times before.

Nice post.

Tears just flow without my knowledge, when someone close to me is hurt. I can cry even for the silliest things, but not in front of others. Like you said in restroom, or when no one is around. But I also have seen these so called macho men, cry profusely. But there are some macho men, who dont cry just not to spoil their image in front of others or rather girls :) Full marks for the topic that you have chosen, Nas.

No, men do not cry [when they are normal]. Sissy, "metrosexual" men cry. Real men don't. I do not repress my feelings. But still, I do not cry.

I don't get sad....I get mad.

But it was kinda funny/amusing readin all the reasons why you cried.....its endearing!

But if there one thing I hate, and I mean hate-its women crying! The gender seems to use tears as a weapon. It is the greatest tool Eve invented for emotional blackmail...... The moment a girl's water works starts, I look around for ways to kill myself! Darn irritating,i say....

Hmm...
This is one cool article you wrote :)

Crying is something that I am known to subject upon others....
Point in case, my Progress (??) Card made my mom cry....hey wait...on seconds thoughts, after my dad checked my progress card, I would end up with 1) teary eyes 2) sore bums....(point in case refers to the FIRST point...the second point...is..well....pointless:) )

Seriously speaking though, I dont remember crying while seeing a movie....Watching our cricket team sure makes me cry though :)

Interesting... very interesting i should say... Very well put and like Bullshee said, the examples were endearing

About the last time i cried.. hmmmm.... cant really remember... i do remember crying once in the 7th for being slapped.

Mayb the tear jerker gland has a lotta bugs as far as men are concerned. Actually, now that you mention it, dont recall see-ing any of my male friends crying in the recent past.

Girls..hmmm... wonderin if there is one i havent seen or heard cry.. wow... talk about inequality of the sexes

Crying. I have to say, this post was most amusing :-) Hope that doesn't make you cry ;-)

As for men crying, what did you find so wrong with it? because it showed a weakness in them? or some other reason.

As for Bullshee's ridiculous statements about men not crying. It is that kind of overt macho'ism that starts wars and other crap like that...

raghav said...

tears for most men depict weakness, and flows over to utter humiliation if it ever happens in public, so most men wouldn't cry even if they were emotionally broken and drained! just to show 'courage'! I agree that i belong to this category.

The advantages of tear shedding is enormous (for explanations read Bullshee's comments) .. but I have a gut feeling that the secretion from the tear glands (male) would not have the desired EB effect on women.. the only purpose that it would serve is to multiply his self pity and misery ..
so let the status quo remain .. let women cry and be emotional .. and men remain impassive and put on a 'brave even in adversity' look .. :)

ps: i have thus commented .. you may please retract ur accusations levelled against me !

First let me start by saying very good blog very intriguing.....
But it is very saddening to hear that ur feeling about men crying mainly cos its a very human of responses and its often true that not crying makes Men what they are something which funnily enough has tremendous amount of often negative impact on women.
Have u ever wondered why Men dont cry well let me let u in one a little secret its not cos they are big strong real Men as someone else put it. Its cos they are told often by women, mothers relatives etc from the very day they are born that "Ayye Annunkal Kareyivo" or "Boys Dont Cry"....."Real Men dont cry" funny I would seriously like to know what Real Men are....Men who say they have not cried are either or people who have a very good life and shud thank god every day for it or are ticking time bombs.....believe me I am one of them tick....tick....tick hehehehe

I personally think that crying is a VERY healthy outlet of frustration and anger. It feels hella good after having a good sob though eh? :) I'm such a crybaby too... I cry over movie endings no matter how shallow. I get so embarrassed whenever I watch a remotely touching movie on a plane where there are loads of people to see you :P

you're lucky that u don't cry at the drop of a hat.....unlike me. i cry about everything. senti movies, insults, watching my friends getting married.....tears of joy as they say.....right upto watching someone win indian idol!!! i think that just about establishes i'm not normal!

@jojo a: Onions!! How insensitive!! Thanks anyway.

@Raji: I know when you cry. Actually had involved one of yr episodes, but thought u needed little rest after the AJJi fiasco ;-). thanks dear

@bullshee: Ok according to you men dont cry. Probably all the residential schooling and hostel life, giving u no space for expressing ur feelings, have ended in ur repressing and expressing it as ANGER. And about females crying, like i have explained painfully WE CRY WHEN WE R HURT. In none of my instances is it used as emotional black mail, We try as much not to cry in front of the other person. You have misunderstood us.

@Writeous Pritesh: Ha Ha Ha!! gets my fav comment award.Y did u stop blogging buddy.

@CM-Chap: I seem to have lot of macho readers, like you. :-)

@Confessions: I see a trend here, you & Bullshee. Is it got something to do with the common alma mater??

@Dj: I donno why i found men crying odd, Maybe its cause it was people whom i looked upto and expected to be strong. I have no idea why i felt bad. And Dj, Spare Bullshee he`s been in an 85% male populated college for 4 yrs. Imagine shedding tears in such surroundings.

@Raghav: Well said! And i conclude yes it is the alma mater!! Even Raghav doesnt cry in public. And please!! We dont cry for EB.Y r u such a fan of EB. Ya if a man cries it WILL soften our hearts, i m sure. Hav heard of a lot of instances. And my accusations werent cause you didnt comment!!!

@Bullshee: Come on u guys FIGHT!! Lets see WAr!! and my comments shoot up to a 100.

@Manu aka Parasu: I totally back you up on the way men are bought up and thats the reason they dont cry. Nothing to do with sissy and stuff like bullshee said. Even the top heores cry in movies. And its not that i found it non-macho. I was jst uncomfy watching a non familiar sight.

@princess: Welcome ladies, have been quite alone in this crying with all the male readers. :-). I empathize totally.

@Zee:Tears of joy Ha! i didnt discuss that, cause my eyes dont get watery when happy. Other than if i laugh a lot. crying over Indian idol:-) jst makes u very Indian. nuthin abnormal

had a nice read.
but i do view crying as a weakness, be it by a guy or a gal ;)

Anonymous said...

Well crying isnt necessarily a form of weakness.... it could be a healthy outburst of emotion...

My eyes well up especially when i am 'red hot' angry.I consider this way more benign than a meltdown.

But shedding tears ever so often will just show you are feeble and people will tend to take advatage of it....

So, even tears in moderation can just be as good....

And hey girls DO NOT use tears as weapons!!!!! If we consider putting a point across, trust me we do have many many ways ....

Quite a well written article, but you know what is the best form of crying? When it is induced by happiness. When the brain feels a myriad of emotions and it doesnt know which one to transmit!

Some one ref. abt this blog to me .. googled Men n Cry ...

From theere :

"Real men should cry. The Bible says: " Jesus Wept" - and remember too that he did it in public. So if Jesus could weep - give me a reason why you shouldnt "
